Driesell Was an Adventurous Spirit
Off of the basketball court, Driesell was known for his adventurous spirit and love of nature – whether boating in Delaware Bay or body surfing at Bethany Beach he always lived his life to its fullest.

Tragedy in His Career
Unfortunately, Coach Driesell faced challenges during his coaching career; most notably the cocaine-induced death of star player Len Bias in 1986 which precipitated tension among coaches and administrators regarding reforms meant to promote athletes academic success, leading eventually to Driesell leaving Maryland altogether.
Driesell finally received the recognition he deserved when, despite all odds, he was honored with election to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018. This incredible tribute honoring Driesell was bestowed in 2018 after decades of hard work for basketball, becoming an indispensable member of its community and leaving an indelible mark that will live on.
Driesell peacefully bid farewell to this world on his terms in Virginia Beach home overlooking Chesapeake Bay a fitting end for someone who enjoyed life’s simple joys. Surrounded by fond memories of Joyce Gunter he bid goodbye in peace to all he knew.
